Clank-clank-clank-clank-hiss-hiss-ROAR!

“Scary,” she whispered. “Noise is what? Show Pretty! Pretty sees!”

“Woodiwoodiwoodiwoodi.”

Scary reshaped himself, creating a little view screen in the front part of the box.

Aieee! What Pretty saw curled her tentacles. They were mere inches away from the tippity-top of the incline. Dead center at its peak, a huge chomping machine hung over the conveyer belt, its eager, hungry mouth lined with dozens of gleaming, serrated teeth. It was twenty Prettys tall and six Prettys wide, and razor-sharp teeth gleamed as its upper jaw smashed down on the next box, hard enough to crush a human being. Something gray oozed out of the box. It smelled terrible. It smelled rotten.

The machine swallowed the shreds of the box and the gray ooze, and they were gone. It ate the next box. More gray stuff spewed out. It was just as stinky.

“Woodiwoodi,” Scary said again.

“Once this basic material has been compressed into little chunks of Mystery Meat, we’ll glitterize it with Toasty Twinkle just before we package it. That way, it will be at maximum strength when it’s delivered to Snickering Willows School for lunch,” Dr. Lao said. “Just the way we processed Neapolitan Nacho. According to my timetable, glitterization should take place around six o’clock Monday morning.”

“In the Ultra Top Secret Enhancement Laboratory,” Ed said.

“Correct. Our team will have to wear hazardous materials suits.”

“Already issued, sir,” Ed informed him.

“Excellent. Since the Toasty Twinkle solution is so highly concentrated, the batch will be quite small. People only need to eat a tiny amount for it to have its desired effect.”

During their conversation, the Scary-box scudded ever closer to the chomper. Pretty had a problem. She could set everything on fire to save herself and Scary, but she didn’t want these Bad Men to know she had heard every word they had uttered. Plus she needed to know more—like if they were planning to hurt Freekin. But now she and Scary were only three boxes away from the cruncher.

Make that two!

“Oh, oh,” she moaned, thumping her tentacles.

Then, in her anxiety, she bit down so hard on her own arm that she screamed.

“AIEEEEEEEE!” she shrieked, leaping up out of the Scary-box like a jack-in-the box.

Dr. Lao and Ed screamed, too. Startled out of his wits, Scary changed back to his own Scary self and threw his wings around Pretty, yelling at the top of his little phantom lungs.

“It’s the dog! Catch it!” Dr. Lao shouted.

Pretty shrieked again. Her eyes spun like pinwheels.

Neither man moved. They just kept screaming.

Scary yelled.

Pretty’s eyes spun faster and faster. Her fangs clacked.

And then the most amazing thing happened: The men’s eyes rolled back in their heads, and they collapsed onto the floor.

Wowie zowie! Pretty had no idea what had just happened, but she had no time to think about it.

“Heigh-ho, Scary!” she cried. She grabbed his wing with her hand. Together they leaped off the conveyer belt and darted back the way they had come, back through the room filled with boxes of Ultra Top Secret Ingredients for BATCH 1314 (TOASTY TWINKLE), and up the main corridor to the stainless steel door.
